Areas of Concentration
Explore your passion. Define your path.
At Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency, we go beyond the basics. Our areas of concentration (AOCs) empower residents to dive deeper into what inspires them — whether that’s sports medicine, maternity care, healthcare advocacy, or osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) for allopathic physicians.
But that’s just the beginning.
Our graduates have stepped into a wide spectrum of impactful careers, such as:
- Correctional medicine
- Academic medicine
- Hospitalist care
- Palliative and hospice care
- Sports medicine
- Advocacy
- Administrative leadership
Make it yours.
Areas of concentration are perfect for residents looking to:
- Build expertise around a specific condition or patient population
- Prepare for fellowship or specialized post-grad training
- Align their clinical focus with career goals
- Create a unique professional identity in medicine
Have a vision that doesn’t fit into a traditional lane? We love that. Residents can create their own customized area of concentration with faculty guidance to make their training uniquely theirs.
How It Works
- Areas of concentration include clearly defined objectives and learning activities
- Interested residents declare an area of concentration during intern year to optimize their final two years
- Area of concentration experiences complement (not replace) core program requirements
