KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – Today, Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center celebrated the opening of its new birth center by inviting expecting parents, community members and local officials to attend a special behind-the-scenes open house. The hospital's recently constructed and highly anticipated fourth floor maternity care unit is modern in design and staffed by a team of experienced labor and delivery specialists. The birth center is the final phase in Kernersville Medical Center’s $55 million expansion project which kicked off in 2021. That plan also included adding a heart and vascular lab and expanding the intensive care unit in 2023.
“We’re very excited to deliver on our promise to bring a birth center to Kernersville,” said Kirsten Royster, chief operating officer for Novant Health’s greater Winston-Salem region, and president and chief operating officer of Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center. “Historically, expecting parents in this area had to leave the community to welcome their new addition. Now growing families have access to complete maternity, post-partum and pediatric care right here in Kernersville.”
Beyond providing labor and delivery services, the new birth center will work closely with the patient’s OB-GYN clinic to provide integrated prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care for expecting low-risk patients. This includes providing 24/7 on-site obstetrician, anesthesiologist and neonatal nurse practitioner support.
When it’s time to deliver, expecting mothers will appreciate that they have a team of support around them, which includes a board-certified obstetrician. Referred to as a laborist, these OB-GYN providers work full-time at the hospital to provide the best in maternity care services. Additionally, while every birth plan is unique, expecting mothers can choose to take advantage of the private and spacious hydrotherapy tubs that are available in each delivery room.
“Everyone on our team is experienced, lives locally and cares deeply about each one of our patients,” said Dr. Natalie Rochester, women’s program leader at Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center, and an OB-GYN at Novant Health WomanCare - Kernersville. “Our team also takes tremendous pride in getting to know and honor each mother’s desired birth plan, which may include various pain management options including hydrotherapy, nitrous oxide and epidurals. Ultimately, we want our patients to feel heard, respected and well-cared for through every step of their pregnancy journey.”
Maternity patients at Kernersville Medical Center will also get to remain in their delivery room throughout their entire stay at the hospital. This saves mom and baby from having to travel to a postpartum room and ensures that the same medical team will be able to provide continuous care through labor, delivery and recovery. This is also a nice perk for maternity patients and their families because they will benefit from the beautiful fourth-floor penthouse views of the hospital.
