Cancer fund renamed in honor of longtime Novant Health physician

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A Novant Health Foundation Forsyth Medical Center cancer fund has been renamed the Elms Allen Cancer Fund, and will be used to give support to cancer patients. The change was created to honor Dr. Elms Allen’s retirement from Novant Health after many years of service. Allen was instrumental in the creation of  Derrick L. Davis Cancer Center.

Allen began his time at Forsyth Medical Center as an oncologist and became vice president of medical affairs, and furthered his career as major gifts officer for Novant Health Foundation Forsyth Medical Center.

“I came to Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in 1973 when oncology wasn’t being practiced at the time,” said Allen. “It has been rewarding to watch the oncology program blossom into an outstanding cancer center that provides such great care for patients.”

Co-workers planned a retirement celebration and surprised Allen with the fund’s new name.

Allen had an impact on many, including Carolyn Breese, who is now the director of philanthropic giving for Hospice & Palliative CareCenter. Breese read a call to action written by Allen, challenging the Triad to help participate in finding a cure for breast cancer. Allen’s challenge inspired Breese to pursue a full-time volunteer position with the local Susan G. Komen affiliate chapter in the Triad.

“Reading Dr. Allen’s call to action motivated me to get involved and it ultimately changed the course of my life,” said Breese. “Dr. Allen has done so much for our community, and has played a large role in ensuring the health of our area.”

Members of the Triad community are welcome to honor Allen’s work in Winston-Salem by making a contribution in his honor to Novant Health Foundation Forsyth Medical Center. Donations may be mailed to 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Box 2, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

“Dr. Allen has played a pivotal role in leading the way for Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center’s oncology program to be what it is today,” said Andrea Gymer, vice president of foundation & community engagement for the Winston-Salem market.

Novant Health Foundation Forsyth Medical Center partners with philanthropic supporters to help provide a comfortable, healing environment for all patients, while expanding treatment options for high-risk patients and supporting the continued education for nurses and other clinical staff.
