Novant Health Charlotte medicine resident, Dr. James Muller, is one of 12 family medicine residents from across the country to receive the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education. Muller was selected for his leadership ability, community involvement, social commitment, exemplary patient care and interpersonal relationships.
There are currently 720 family medicine residency programs nationwide and 16,713 family medicine residents in training. Of the 4,665 eligible family medicine residents, only 12 residents were chosen for this esteemed distinction. Muller’s medical interests in sexual health, gender-affirming care and HIV management within family medicine stood out amongst his peers.
“It is an honor to be recognized for the work I am passionate about within family medicine, such as gender-affirming care, serving the LGBTQIA+ community and advocating for PrEP,” said Muller. “It is a pleasure coming to work every day and I am so thankful for all the teachers, attendings and mentors who have always encouraged my passions within family medicine. I am very excited to continue and advocating for my patients as I navigate my career with Novant Health after graduating residency.”
Upon graduation from the Novant Health Family Medicine Residency Program in June 2023, Muller intends to continue patient care with Novant Health, specializing in LGBTQIA+ medicine, gender-affirming care, HIV care, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), chronic disease management and osteopathic manipulative therapy, serving the Charlotte metro area.
Novant Health was recently honored as a 2022 recipient of Diversity Impact Awards by the Association of Employee Resource Groups (ERG) & Councils. Dr. Muller’s commitment, leadership and support of diversity and inclusion at Novant Health are a testament to our core values.
