WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Novant Health has appointed Mark Murray, M.D., Ph.D., as physician in chief of the Novant Health Neurosciences Institute effective April 7. In this role, he is responsible for supporting the clinical advancement of neuroscience-related care provided by nearly 230 physicians and advanced practice providers across the system, including spine, pain and sleep services at 58 clinic locations.
“With decades of service as a vascular and interventional neurologist, Dr. Murray brings a wealth of expertise to our organization,” said Dr. John Mann, president of specialty institutes, Novant Health. “Dr. Murray has spent much of his life and career leading teams -- all the way back to his basketball days at Xavier University. Dr. Murray has expertise in stroke genetics, acute stroke management and stroke interventions. In his previous roles with other health systems, he successfully enacted changes to improve stroke response procedures. He also has experience in minimally invasive neurological procedures. As a scientist, he served as the principal investigator on several clinical trials.
Most recently Dr. Murray served as executive medical director for neuroscience services at CommonSpirit Health Mountain Region, where he developed and implemented several initiatives, including a new teleneurology platform, artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, and new treatment programs for epilepsy, back pain and traumatic brain injury.
Dr. Murray earned his medical degree and a doctorate in neurogenetics from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. His postgraduate education included a residency in neurology at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he served as chief resident, followed by an interventional neurology fellowship at the North Texas Stroke Institute.
