WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Dr. Carrie Johnson, a pain specialist with an oncology focus, recently joined the Novant Health Derrick L. Davis Cancer Institute in Winston-Salem.
Johnson, who previously practiced in the Triad for more than a decade, now cares for patients in the Novant Health Symptom Management Clinic within the cancer institute. She helps patients navigate the expected effects often associated with cancer treatment – including fatigue, nausea and pain.
“We see patients of all cancer types,” said Johnson. “While today’s cancer therapies are highly effective, they can also take a toll on a patient’s physical and emotional health. Our goal is to provide holistic support that complements treatment, eases pain and preserves the dignity of every patient we serve.”
As a pain specialist, Johnson creates individualized care management plans that may include medication, physical therapy, steroid injections and minimally invasive nerve block procedures.
“Dr. Johnson brings a unique skill set to help patients manage pain symptoms that were once considered to be an unavoidable part of the suffering associated with cancer,” said Dr. David Sindram, a hepatopancreatobiliary surgeon at Novant Health. “She has already helped hundreds of patients across the Triad, and we are thrilled our patients will now have convenient access to her expertise within our cancer institute.”
The Novant Health Symptom Management Clinic also offers emotional support, education for informed decision making, coordination of care, mental health support, as well as palliative care and end-of-life planning.
