WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Oct. 30, 2025 – Both of Novant Health’s accountable care organizations (ACOs) have earned national recognition for delivering exceptional quality care and generating significant savings for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) through the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP). For the second year in a row, Physician Quality Partners ranked No. 1 for quality performance out of more than 450 MSSP ACOs nationwide, while Novant Health ACO ranked No. 18.
Together, the organizations generated a combined $38 million in savings for CMS, while ranking in the top 4% nationally for quality performance. Physician Quality Partners scored 98.69% in quality, and Novant Health ACO scored 94.52%, far surpassing the quality performance standard of 77.05% required for shared savings.
In determining quality scores, CMS evaluates measurements such as patient screenings for cancer and chronic disease, prevention strategies and helping patients control conditions such as hypertension. The ranking also considers metrics such as access to timely appointments and patients’ rating of care teams.
“Our consistent, nation-leading results are a testament to the strong work of our primary care physicians and advanced practice providers, whose commitment to their patients is helping us be a model to others in how we advance overall quality of care in our communities,” said Dr. Charin Hanlon, chair, Physician Quality Partners ACO, and also vice president of medical education for Novant Health.
Novant Health ACO has achieved shared savings for a fifth straight year through its participation in CMS’ Medicare Shared Savings Program. In 2024, Novant Health ACO generated a total savings of over $33.8 million for CMS, which results in a total payment of $24.9 million to Novant Health. Physician Quality Partners generated over $4 million in total savings for CMS, which results in a total payment of $2.9 million to Novant Health.
“This recognition is a reflection of our care teams’ commitment to ensuring our patients receive the right care at the right time,” said Dr. Jacques Laguerre, chair, Novant Health ACO, and senior physician executive, Novant Health Community Health & Wellness Institute. “Our combined savings and quality rankings validate our approach to improving health outcomes while reducing costs for the communities we serve.”
