WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Oct. 18, 2023 – Novant Health announced today that both of its accountable care organizations (ACO) – Novant Health ACO and New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s ACO, Physician Quality Partners – have been recognized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) for high quality performance and have achieved a combined savings of more than $27 million for CMS.
The organizations ranked first and second in North Carolina for MSSP ACO quality performance, with Physician Quality Partners achieving a quality score of 97.8% and Novant Health ACO achieving a quality score of 90.5%. These scores far surpassed the threshold to open the door to shared savings. In fact, CMS required ACOs to exceed the 30th percentile score for quality to open the door to shared savings in 2022 – and the 30th percentile score released by CMS was 70.63%.

Further, the Novant Health ACO has achieved shared savings for a third straight year through its participation in CMS’ Medicare Shared Savings Program. In 2022, the Novant Health ACO generated a total savings of over $22.8 million for CMS, which results in a total payment of $11.2 million to Novant Health.* Physician Quality Partners generated nearly $4.7 million in total savings for CMS, which results in a total payment of $2.3 million to Novant Health.*
