WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Three business leaders have been appointed to the Novant Health board of trustees. The new members are Phil Colaço, Dr. James Johnson and Bill Pappas.

Phil Colaço is a philanthropist and global leader in investment banking who served as CEO and global corporate finance leader at Deloitte Corporate Finance (DCF) until his retirement in 2023. During a decade at DCF, Colaço positioned the firm as the world’s leading organization in mergers and acquisitions by deal volume for several years.
Prior to joining Deloitte Corporate Finance, Colaço was a managing director and co-founding partner at McColl Partners, following earlier roles at Bowles Hollowell Conner/First Union Securities and Lehman Brothers. Throughout his career, Colaço has advised on numerous high-profile transactions across diverse sectors, including healthcare and professional services, manufacturing, software, postsecondary education, community banking and consumer finance.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Virginia and a Master of Business Administration from the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago.
Dr. James Johnson is a board-certified diagnostic radiologist and neuroradiologist who recently retired from Mecklenburg Radiology Associates (MRA), the oldest radiology group in the state, where he was a partner and former president focused on serving the Charlotte and Salisbury communities. Johnson currently works remotely for Radiology Associates of Richmond, Virginia. He has dedicated his career to elevating the quality and level of radiological diagnostic and interventional services available to patients.
During his career, he has served on the MRA board of directors, as chairman of the Department of Radiology at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, and as a member of the boards of directors for Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, the Novant Health Rowan Medical Center Foundation, and the Novant Health Southern Piedmont Region Board. He recently served on the executive committee of the board of managers of Strategic Radiology, a consortium of elite independent radiology practices throughout the United States.
Johnson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and a medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. He completed his residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, followed by a neuroradiology fellowship at Allegheny General Hospital of the Medical College of Pennsylvania.
Bill Pappas serves as a corporate officer and head of global technology and operations for MetLife. As a member of the executive leadership team, Pappas directs a team of 38,000 people responsible for technology development, cybersecurity, data strategy and analytics, customer service and other key areas serving more than 90 million customers around the world.
Prior to joining MetLife, Pappas led operations for the consumer, small business wealth management and private banking businesses at Bank of America. Previously, he was chief information officer for Bank of America’s global wholesale banking business, head of global capital markets operations, and head of technology and operations for the Europe, Middle East and Africa, Latin America and Asia Pacific regions.
He earned a cum laude Bachelor of Arts degree in government and a Master of Business Administration from Bentley University, in Waltham, Massachusetts, where he also serves on its board of trustees.
