WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – On June 15, Novant Health leaders gathered at the corner of Today’s Woman Avenue and Burton Street to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony for a new primary care clinic in east Winston-Salem.

The goal of the new clinic is to improve access to primary care services in a known provider shortage area of Forsyth County. If that location sounds familiar, it’s because Novant Health Today’s Woman OB/GYN has served in that location since 1995. The clinic, which also houses Novant Health Today’s Pediatrics, will expand to include Novant Health Today’s Adult Primary Care in early 2024. Once complete, the clinic will serve as a family-centered extension of care for all adult patients, including men for the first time.

“We’re very excited to add a new primary care clinic to this historically underserved area of our community,” said Joyce Mounce, senior director, Novant Health Community Health & Wellness Institute for the greater Winston-Salem market. “While Novant Health Today’s Woman OB/GYN and Novant Health Today’s Pediatrics have and continue to do an exceptional job of taking care of the women and children in this community, we know that access to care for adult patients, particularly men, is an ongoing challenge as well. We also know that not having access to primary care services can and often does lead to worse health outcomes down the road. This new clinic will not only improve access to needed primary care services, but it will also allow families, for the first time in this community, to receive all of their care in one convenient location.”

The construction project will include a 2,745-square-foot expansion and a complete redesign of the existing clinics. While care will continue to be provided during construction, patients will soon notice visible changes within the clinic’s modern new design and layout. Additionally, exam room space will nearly double in capacity.

The on-site community engagement center will also be renovated and expanded to offer a new multipurpose space and a revamped drop-off donation area. The community engagement center is staffed by trained outreach specialists to identify non-medical barriers to care and help patients lead healthier lives. This can include providing education about screenings and prevention, transportation assistance or connecting patients to additional community resources. The clinic also has a unique partnership with HealthCare Access that allows patients to work with an on-site financial navigator to apply for health care coverage.

“Our mission is to improve the health of our community, one patient at a time,” said Nicole Brenner, senior director, Novant Health Women’s & Children’s Institute for the greater Winston-Salem market. “While this obviously includes providing medical care services, it also involves our long-standing commitment to support our patients with additional tools and resources to address all aspects of wellness, including social determinates of health. By working closely with our community partners, we’re able to not only identify the unique challenges facing our patients, but also provide them with donated supplies, education opportunities, financial assistance and a connection to other outreach programs and services that are available in the area. Ultimately, we want all of our patients, regardless of their stage of life or specific need, to know that we are here to help.”

Through the generosity of its donors, the Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Foundation has supported Novant Health Today's Clinics since their founding, contributing vital opeartional resources and transportation assistance for patients. Additionally, the Foundation's recent commitment of $2 million will establish Novant Health Today's Adult Primary Care, ensuring all aspects of family-centered care will be available for patients in and around the Boston Thurmond community.
