GREENVILLE, S.C. – Novant Health leaders, physicians and community partners gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of the health system’s first medical campus in the Upstate of South Carolina, a milestone marking the beginning of Novant Health’s physical footprint in the Greenville region.

Located on Patewood Drive, construction will begin with a medical office building and ambulatory surgery center, with plans for a future hospital already approved by the state. The hospital will open as a 20-bed, outpatient-focused facility offering best-in-class surgical services, specialty care, diagnostic imaging and the flexibility to expand as demand grows.
“This is more than breaking ground on a building. This campus represents a significant investment in the Upstate,” said Jason Bernd, senior vice president and president of Novant Health’s South Carolina region. “We’re not just building a facility; we’re building relationships, creating jobs and opening new opportunities for this community.”
“Healthcare is better when patients have options,” said Ryan Lee, president of Novant Health Greenville. “Choice benefits patients and healthcare teams. It encourages innovation, raises the bar and ultimately leads to better outcomes. This groundbreaking is just the start of our plan to connect the Upstate with a full network of care.”

The first physician to join Novant Health in the Greenville area is Michael Kissenberth, MD, a nationally recognized orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist. “I’ve practiced in the Upstate for nearly two decades and I know what this community needs,” Kissenberth said. “This new campus will deliver world-class specialty care in a way that gives patients real choice, and gives healthcare professionals a place where they can thrive.”
Leaders also highlighted Novant Health’s growing presence in the region, including the Orthopedics & Sports Medicine clinic opening in Congaree this fall and a new partnership with Clemson University.
Novant Health’s expansion into the Upstate builds on its growth in South Carolina, which includes facilities and services in Charleston and Hilton Head areas.

“We are here for the long haul, as a healthcare provider, an employer and a neighbor,” Lee said. “Our goal is to earn this community’s trust, not just today, but every day we’re here.”
