Novant Health brings next-level cardiac care to Elkin with clinic expansion and new screenings

ELKIN, N.C. – Novant Health Cardiology in Elkin is making it easier for patients in Surry and Wilkes counties to schedule comprehensive heart care appointments, including diagnostic screenings.

The clinic at 189 Samaritans Ridge Road was recently expanded to offer improved access to heart and vascular care in the region. The expansion includes two new specialty-trained clinicians, double the number of exam rooms, and the addition of new on-site diagnostic screening technology.

“While most people know that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., fewer realize that heart failure rates are nearly 20% higher in rural communities,” said Alisha Sexton, senior director of the Novant Health Heart & Vascular Institute in the Triad Region. “Our goal is to change the heart disease narrative across the communities we serve by providing proactive care and screening options that will help us detect and address heart issues before they have a chance to develop into something more serious.”

Expanded screening services
All effective care plans begin with securing an accurate diagnosis. That’s why leaders at Novant Health Cardiology decided to expand in-clinic screening options to include:

Echocardiogram: A second echocardiogram room has been added to improve access to diagnostic screening care. This test, also known as a heart ultrasound, uses sound waves to evaluate the structure and function of the heart.
Nuclear stress test: This screening measures blood flow and detects blockages in the coronary (heart) arteries. This screening technology is expected to be available at the clinic early next year.
Vascular ultrasound: This sound-wave technology helps clinicians quickly assess circulatory health by monitoring blood flow in the peripheral arteries of the neck, arms and legs.
A dedicated vein clinic procedure room has been added to the clinic and is expected to become operational next year. This will allow patients to receive local treatment for conditions such as varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and peripheral arterial disease (PAD). These vein services are currently available nearby at Novant Health Cardiology in Mount Airy.
