Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center to co-host community baby shower

Bolivia, N.C., Sept. 19, 2016 For the second year in a row, Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center will partner with several Brunswick County businesses to co-host a community baby shower Saturday, Sept. 24, in Shallotte. Vendors will give out gently used items for babies and small children, including clothing, toys, diapers and toiletries. Attendees will also be entered in a contest to win a new car seat.

“We see a lot of families at the hospital who, when they go home, may not have everything they need,” said Lauren Haigler, a CNA at Brunswick Medical Center. Haigler initiated the first community baby shower in 2015. “We don’t want to send people home needing things, so I thought of the idea to have our community come together to supply new parents with items they need for their babies.”

During the event, Brunswick Medical Center will provide information on breastfeeding, childbirth classes, car seat safety checks and more.

“The community baby shower is a demonstration of Novant Health’s commitment to Brunswick County,” said Beth Hicks, nurse manager, women’s services, Brunswick Medical Center. “When parents are having their first baby, there will always be a need for items they’ve never had. We are proud to provide an opportunity for those needs to be met through this unique event.”

More than 100 people attended last year’s inaugural event, where more than 500 baby outfits, 440 diapers and 150 toiletry items were given away.
