Novant Health Cancer Center acquires new radiation technology

Manassas, Va., Nov. 23 –Novant Health Cancer Center recently added the TrueBeam STx system, an advanced radiation treatment that performs image-guided stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) to tumors in hard-to-reach areas such as the lungs, brain and pancreas.

“Too often, patients are told their cancers are untreatable because they have specific, hard-to-reach tumor sites,” said Dr. Sanjeev Aggarwal, Novant Health Cancer Center medical director. “The addition of SRS and SBRT will give our patients another option when it comes to their fight against cancer.”

TrueBeam technology allows radiation oncologists to visualize and target the tumor they are treating with submillimeter accuracy, while protecting nearby healthy organs. TrueBeam also delivers radiation doses twice as fast as other radiosurgery systems, minimizing the risk a patient may move and expediting the time spent in each treatment. Most patients are able to complete their treatment in as few as one to five visits.

“TrueBeam STx is a breakthrough technology that enhances our ability to treat cancer with noninvasive image-guided radiosurgery,” said Dr. Moira Sutton with Novant Health radiation oncology. “We’re proud to bring this advanced treatment option to patients in our community in need of high-level cancer care.”
