About Pap tests

A Pap test, or Pap smear, is used to detect potentially pre-cancerous and cancerous processes in the cervix, usually done in conjunction with a pelvic exam. The test can find cell changes to the cervix caused by the human papilloma virus, or HPV.

By detecting the virus, this HPV test can help healthcare providers determine which women are at higher risk for cervical cancer.
