Winston-Salem, N.C., Nov. 7, 2016 – Novant Health donated a book this month to more than 200 second-grade classrooms in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School (WSFCS) system to help students learn math. The book – Saved by Addition by Rachel Rogers and Joe Lineberry – is part of the Gift of Numbers series and creates a unique storyline tailored to reinforce the classroom’s math concepts.
Rogers, a second-grade teacher at Old Richmond Elementary School in Tobaccoville, North Carolina, and Lineberry use the power of fantasy to add adventure to learning math. “Teachers and students join the world of even and odd numbers, who model math principles and learn the benefits of cooperation and good health,” Rogers said. “In our opinion, teaching math through fantasy is a unique and effective approach, especially to engage students who struggle with math.”
Rogers said that the school system reviewed the book and approved it as part of its math curriculum for teachers to use as a supplemental source. “Novant Health has seen the value of our series of math fantasies and has recently delivered a copy of Saved by Addition to each second-grade class in the entire WSFCS school system,” Rogers said.
Laura Holby, manager of social responsibility at Novant Health, said this is the first time Novant Health has invested in such a project. “We truly hope teaching children to recognize even and odd numbers will be enhanced through the book’s unique storyline, discussion questions and exercises,” Holby said.
Each character in the book intentionally models diversity, teamwork and healthy lifestyles.
