WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Foundation awarded $24,650 in scholarships from six different scholarship funds to nurses in Novant Health’s greater Winston-Salem market this month to coincide with National Nurses Week. The scholarship dollar amount was a new high for the foundation and will allow local nurses to further their education.
Some of the current nursing scholarship funds set up through the foundation were established in honor of or in memory of a special person, often someone connected to the nursing field. For example, the Cindy Jarrett-Pulliam Scholarship Fund was named in honor of Cindy Jarrett-Pulliam, the chief nursing officer for Novant Health’s greater Winston-Salem market who has battled thyroid cancer and has devoted her life to serving the nursing profession and her patients.
The scholarship named for Jarrett-Pulliam provides financial assistance to greater Winston-Salem market nurses who are pursuing further education to receive a baccalaureate, masters, doctorate of nursing or philosophy doctorate of nursing degree. This year’s recipients of the Cindy Jarrett-Pulliam Scholarship were Tammy Goodwin, Heather Strange and Ann Smith. Other scholarship recipients included Wells Fargo Scholarship recipients Kristel Hurst and Amber Jones; Pope Scholarship recipient Beverly Cline-Belcher; Simmons Fund Scholarship recipients Jessica Beck, Wendy Castro, Emily Rhodes and Courtney Hall; and Lara Fix Scholarship recipient Alexia Bowman. Several nurses were also awarded group scholarships for critical continuing education programs.
“Being able to work with the community members, businesses and institutions to help nurses achieve their educational goals is especially rewarding for the foundation,” said Heather Egan, a development officer with the Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Foundation. “Nurses work incredibly hard and their efforts make a remarkable difference for our patients and their families.”
