WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Recognizing Novant Health's commitment to provide equitable and inclusive care for all, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation named 14 Novant Health hospitals as "Leaders in LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality." The HRC Foundation is the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization.
“This honor marks seven years where all eligible Novant Health hospitals have been recognized, further solidifying our position as a leader in providing remarkable care to the LGBTQ+ community,” said Dr. Chere Gregory, senior vice president and chief health equity officer at Novant Health. “It is our goal to ensure all patients, including our LGBTQ+ patients, visitors and team members feel valued and cared for – this commitment is embedded in our culture. We are proud to be recognized once again by the HRC Foundation for delivering on that commitment.”
The designation is part of the annual Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), the national LGBTQ+ benchmarking tool that evaluates healthcare facilities' policies and practices related to the equity and inclusion of their LGBTQ+ patients, visitors and employees. Out of 1,065 health care facilities participating in the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) 2024 survey, only 384 nationwide were recognized as "Leaders in LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality.” All Novant Health hospitals included in the most recent survey received a 2024 scorecard of 100.
Novant Health helps ensure LGBTQ+ patients have access to the highest level of care through many initiatives, including:
- Novant Health’s LGBTQ+ community voice council, which advises on building an inclusive environment.
- Clinicians across multiple specialties, including mental health clinicians, with expertise in LGBTQ+ care.
- Novant Health LGBTQ+ clinical leaders committee, which spearheads the advancement of patient-centered LGBTQ+ care and services.
- Comprehensive LGBTQ+ training options for team members and clinicians.
- LGBTQ+ care designations on Novant Health’s online physician finder tool, helping patients identify which clinicians best meet their care needs.
