Novant Health Matthews Medical Center expands, opens new critical care tower

The new bed tower will help meet the changing needs of the rapidly growing Matthews community.

Novant Health Matthews Medical Center is expanding to enhance the advanced care available in Matthews and the surrounding communities. The completion of the new four-story, 150,000 square-foot critical care tower was celebrated at a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The new bed tower has expanded surgical and heart and vascular services and added inpatient capacity, including a new ICU, which allows for increased access to advanced services. With this addition, Novant Health Matthews Medical Center went from 157 to 177 beds, helping to meet the evolving health care needs of the rapidly growing Matthews community.

“We recognize the profound impact this new bed tower will have on the patients we serve. This beautiful, state-of-the-art space is meant to be a sanctuary of healing, and our expert care teams take that responsibility seriously,” said Zack Landry, president and chief operating officer of Novant Health Matthews Medical Center. “Our new space is equipped with the latest technology, allowing our teams to continue to deliver on the high-quality and safe care we are known for as we bring remarkable futures to life in the Matthews community and beyond.”

Located on the south side of the hospital campus, the new tower houses 24 private patient rooms in the medical/surgical unit. Each room is equipped with smart room technology to enhance patient and team member communication and education. Surgical services include seven operating rooms, three procedure rooms, a post-anesthesia care unit, and an ambulatory care unit. The imaging suite has expanded with the addition of a second fixed MRI and new cardiovascular suites have been added. Additionally, the new intensive care unit (ICU) will expand from 10 to 16 beds, allowing the sickest patients to receive specialized care.

"When Novant Health Matthews Medical Center first opened its doors 30 years ago, the organization promised to grow and adapt with the community. We have done that many times over the years and we're proud to mark three decades of compassionate and comprehensive care with this latest expansion," said Landry.

The medical/surgical unit will open early February, followed by surgical services. The new ICU will open in summer 2025. Vannoy Construction was the general contractor and McCulloch England Architects, the original architects of Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, was behind the design.
