Novant Health to Host Free Medication Disposal Event

Novant Health and the Brunswick Country Sheriff’s Department will host a free medication disposal event at the Brunswick Beacon Health Expo on Saturday, February 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Shallotte Middle School.

Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center pharmacy staff will be on hand to collect all unwanted and expired medications, including controlled substances, prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, liquids, inhalers and vitamins. All items will be accepted.

In the past, many residents thought it was appropriate to simply dispose of medications in the trash or by flushing them down the toilet. These disposal methods are not recommended as substances may end up in our community’s water supply when disposed of in this manner.

The medication disposal event at the Health Expo will help ensure that unwanted or outdated drugs are disposed of properly so that they do not fall into the wrong hands. The medication disposal event is an opportunity to contest the growing epidemic of prescription drug misuse. Although this event is provided in part by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Department, it is not a law enforcement event and all items are acceptable for drop-off without question.

Participants will also have the opportunity to explore the other activities at the Brunswick Beacon Health Expo, which is free to the public. Screenings and activities will include cholesterol, prediabetes, blood pressure screenings, and more.
