Novant Health unveils extensive plans to expand access to care across Brunswick County

Plans include a new Leland hospital and expansion in southern Brunswick County to offer more access points for healthcare
LELAND, N.C. – Novant Health is moving forward with major expansion plans in Brunswick County to elevate access to healthcare in North Carolina’s fastest-growing county.

The newly announced plans include a proposed hospital along U.S. 74/76 in Leland, a free-standing emergency department in Carolina Shores and investments to advance care capabilities at Novant Health’s community hospital in Bolivia. The plans complement ongoing construction for an ambulatory surgery center in the Leland area, which will expand access to convenient surgical care.

“Our strategic efforts are designed to expand access to care close to home to meet the current and future care needs of this community,” said Ernie Bovio, president of the Novant Health Coastal Region. “Novant Health has proudly served Brunswick County for nearly 20 years, and we’re excited to continue to add facilities and recruit needed physicians to secure healthcare access throughout the county.”

Novant Health has submitted a certificate of need application to build a 20-bed hospital, to be called the Novant Health Leland Medical Center, near the Compass Pointe community. The hospital would include a 24/7 emergency department, imaging services, 10 observation beds and five procedure rooms.

In addition, Novant Health continues to expand services at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center in Bolivia, which will soon feature an expanded MRI space and a new cardiac catheterization lab. The new lab will allow patients to receive interventional cardiology procedures, such as stent placements, without having to travel outside the county.

To expand access to emergency care in southern Brunswick County, Novant Health submitted a certificate of need application to develop a new freestanding emergency department near U.S. 17 in Carolina Shores.

“Brunswick County is one of the largest counties in the state by land area,” said Laurie Whalin, president, Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center and acute care operations for the Novant Health Coastal Region. “Our existing inpatient and emergency care is concentrated in the middle of the county, so we’re focused on extending care options to better serve population centers throughout the county. We’re also continuing to explore other opportunities to grow care in this community and throughout the region.”
