Novant Health Matthews Medical Center celebrates topping out ceremony of new critical care tower

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Oct. 3, 2023) – Today, representatives from Novant Health and Vannoy Construction gathered to celebrate the structural completion of the new critical care tower at Novant Health Matthews Medical Center. The ceremony, known as a “topping out,” is commemorated when the steel structure’s final beam is welded into place, marking the project’s midpoint. Once completed, the new four-story, 150,000 square-foot tower and 50,000 square-foot critical care tower will increase medical care at Matthews Medical Center from 157 to 174 beds, meeting the health care needs of the rapidly growing Matthews community.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the hard work and continued progress taking place every day for our future critical care tower,” said Jason Bernd, president and chief operating officer, Novant Health Matthews Medical Center. “While the topping out certainly represents a significant construction milestone, it also serves as a symbolic reminder of our long-term goal to improve the health of our community, one patient at a time. Matthews and the surrounding area is booming. In fact, our population growth has been four times the national average. It’s more important than ever for Novant Health Matthews Medical Center to grow with it. This new project will renovate surgical services, heart and vascular, and add inpatient capacity, including a new intensive care unit, which will allow us to add advanced services.”

Located on the south side of the hospital campus, the new tower will house 20 new patient beds along with surgical services to include seven operating rooms, three endoscopy suites, a post-anesthesia care unit and an ambulatory care unit. Additionally, there will be three cardiac suites.

Matthews Medical Center, located at 1500 Matthews Township Parkway, opened in 1994 as a 102-bed community hospital. It has expanded several times over the years, including a fifth-floor vertical expansion and a new women’s center doubling the size of its maternity services. Currently the hospital has 157 licensed beds. With this expansion, it will become a 174-bed hospital.

The first clinical space in the new tower is scheduled to open summer 2024. The anticipated completion date for the entire project is summer 2025. Vannoy Construction is the general contractor and McCulloch England Architects, the original architects of Matthews Medical Center, is behind the design.
