Novant Health maternity care most awarded in North Carolina

Six Novant Health hospitals recognized for maternity excellence by US News & World Report

Winston Salem, N.C. – Six of Novant Health’s hospitals have been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as High Performing hospitals for maternity care, making the health system’s maternity care the highest rated in North Carolina.

U.S. News & World Report evaluated 680 hospitals, and less than half received a High Performing designation. Novant Health’s recognized hospitals include Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center, Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center and Novant Health Matthews Medical Center. The rating is the highest a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care. The annual evaluation is designed to assist parents and their doctors in making informed decisions about the best place to receive maternity care services.

“While many factors go into the U.S. News’ Best Hospitals evaluation process, Novant Health’s goal is simple: Healthy mom, healthy baby. We’re very proud to be recognized as a leader in providing high-quality maternity care services,” said Dr. Lewis Lipscomb, the physician executive of the Novant Health Women’s & Children's Institute. “This recognition is a testament to the fact that everyone on our maternity care team is committed to providing the best in truly comprehensive care for our expectant moms and their babies.”

The high performing methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality, such as cesarean section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, early elective delivery rates and vaginal birth after cesarean rates, among other measures.

“When expectant parents are considering their options for welcoming a baby to the world, the Best Hospitals for Maternity Care is designed to help them identify hospitals that excel in delivering babies for uncomplicated pregnancies,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “A hospital that has earned a High Performing designation may be a good option for parents, in consultation with their medical provider, to consider.”
