Novant Health celebrates topping out of future Scotts Hill Medical Center

WILMINGTON, N.C., July 23, 2024 – Novant Health and community leaders came together today for a construction milestone at the future hospital in Scotts Hill, which will expand care north of Wilmington.

The topping out ceremony celebrates the completion of the final beam being welded into place for the steel structure that will house Novant Health Scotts Hill Medical Center. Once completed, the new hospital will serve northern New Hanover and eastern Pender counties, meeting the health care needs of the rapidly growing U.S. 17 corridor.

The three-story, 250,000-square-foot community hospital will have a surgical focus. Scotts Hill Medical Center will include operating rooms, procedure rooms, and space dedicated to gastroenterology and endoscopy procedures.

“While today’s topping out ceremony represents a big milestone to the completion of the Scotts Hill campus, it also serves as a reminder that we are committed to increasing access to health care for our community,” said Laurie Whalin, president of Scotts Hill Medical Center and chief operating officer of Novant Health’s coastal region. “Scotts Hill will offer increased access to specialty care and surgical care closer to home.”

The hospital will connect to the existing Novant Health Emergency Department - Scotts Hill, which will more than double in size as part of the construction. The campus will also include a new medical office building, which is under construction. Those outpatient services will include: primary care, heart and vascular, urology, neurology, pediatrics specialty care, radiation oncology, general surgery, surgical navigation and rehabilitation services.

The medical office building is scheduled to open by the end of the year while the hospital will remain under construction through 2026.
