S.C. approves Novant Health’s Certificate of Need application for new 20-bed hospital in Greenville

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The South Carolina Department of Public Health has approved Novant Health’s Certificate of Need (CON) application to build a 20-bed hospital in Greenville, reinforcing the health system’s long-term commitment to expanding access to high-quality, affordable healthcare across the Upstate.

The state-of-the-art facility on Patewood Drive will be outpatient-focused, delivering a range of services designed to meet the community’s growing need for efficient, innovative care. Plans for the new hospital include specialty services, operating rooms and diagnostic imaging, with the flexibility to expand based on future demand.

“This approval represents a meaningful milestone for Novant Health and the communities we are honored to serve in the Upstate,” said Jason Bernd, senior vice president, Novant Health, president of the South Carolina Region. “As one of the fastest-growing areas in the state, Greenville deserves expanded access to high-quality care close to home. This new hospital will allow us to deliver on that promise for patients who live in Greenville and the surrounding communities.”

The project is part of a broader effort by Novant Health to strengthen its presence in South Carolina by building new facilities, recruiting physician experts and delivering care that puts patients first. With the addition of the Patewood Drive hospital, the nonprofit health system will continue to expand services in a way that is tailored to the unique needs of each community, including holistic, seamless care coordination across the region. Novant Health already owns urgent care facilities across South Carolina as well as hospitals and practices on the coast.

Ryan Lee was named president of Novant Health’s Greenville area in April. Lee most recently served as president of Novant Health Coastal Carolina Medical Center in Hardeeville, where he helped elevate the facility to be designated as South Carolina’s first Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery.

“I’m honored to help bring Novant Health’s remarkable care model to the Upstate,” said Lee, a Clemson graduate who recently moved to Greenville with his family to lead Novant Health’s Upstate strategy. “This hospital is just the beginning of Novant Health’s commitment to one of the fastest-growing communities in South Carolina. We’re working closely with local leaders and community partners to ensure our investments align with the region’s unique health and social needs.”
