Six Novant Health hospitals among only 36 nationally recognized for excellence in diabetes care

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Six Novant Health hospitals – out of only 36 nationwide – have been named by the Leapfrog Group and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) as 2025 Recognized Leaders in Caring for People Living with Diabetes. The six Novant Health medical centers are the only recognized hospitals in North Carolina.

The program, in its second year, evaluates hospitals based on their care for patients with diabetes on admission, during their hospitalization and at discharge. The recognized Novant Health hospitals are:

  • Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center
  • Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center
  • Novant Health Matthews Medical Center
  • Novant Health Mint Hill Medical Center
  • Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center
  • Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center

“Our work to create a healthier future includes a commitment to provide personalized care to every patient across the communities we serve,” said Dr. David Priest, senior vice president and chief safety and quality officer, Novant Health. “Patients with diabetes have unique needs during their hospital stay, and we are honored that the work of our team to provide safe, high-quality care has been nationally recognized by the Leapfrog Group and the American Diabetes Association.”

The program evaluates hospitals based on the ADA’s Standards of Care in Diabetes and Leapfrog’s rigorous standards for safety and quality. According to Leapfrog and the ADA’s program criteria, the six recognized Novant Health hospitals demonstrated safe, high-quality care for people with diabetes throughout hospitalization, including by implementing specific protocols related to blood-sugar testing and hypoglycemia, surgery preparation, meals and insulin regimen planning. These hospitals also offer robust planning for high-risk patients with diabetes before being discharged from the hospital.

This recognition is an extension of Novant Health’s holistic approach to quality by maintaining a culture of continuous learning and improvement through the Novant Health Institute of Safety & Quality. The institute's many practices include real-time quality reporting and data analysis, daily safety huddles, patient safety coaches and frequent team member surveys.

In addition to caring for hospitalized patients with diabetes, Novant Health offers robust services to prevent and treat diabetes with care teams comprised of primary care providers, registered dietitians, pharmacists, endocrinologists and other specialists. Novant Health Diabetes & Nutrition clinics are also recognized by the ADA for Quality Self-Management Education

The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization, reviews hospital and patient outcomes across the United States and issues recognitions and ratings based on safety, quality, patient experience and other measures. The American Diabetes Association is the nation’s leading voluntary health organization fighting to end diabetes and improve outcomes for the 136 million people in the U.S. living with prediabetes or diabetes.
