The Triad is growing rapidly with more retirees and families calling Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point “home.” Some come for the weather, while others move here to be close to family or for a new job. And once people settle in, they need healthcare.

Novant Health is a thriving not-for-profit healthcare system headquartered here in Winston-Salem, providing care across North and South Carolina within our 19 hospitals and more than 850 outpatient locations.

The healthcare system’s 40,000 team members are committed to offering leading-edge, comprehensive, compassionate care close to where people live and work — including here in Winston-Salem, home to the system’s largest hospital, Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center and Novant Health Medical Park Hospital, as well as Novant Health Clemmons Medical Center, Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center and Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center.

Good health starts with a visit to a primary care physician.

Safety and experience are the foundation

When it comes to safety and patient experience, Novant Health’s hospitals are known for outperforming the majority of hospitals nationwide. In fact, Novant Health was awarded the most A’s for patient safety in North Carolina from The Leapfrog Group, a national, industry-leading nonprofit, evaluates more than 30 national performance measures to assess hospital outcomes.

Heart care

One in five deaths is caused by heart disease, America’s leading killer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Novant Health holds a top national ranking for heart surgery, due in part to its team approach to care. Physicians work directly with a patient’s primary care provider and cardiologist throughout treatment, said interventional cardiologist Robert Preli, MD of Novant Health Cardiology in Winston-Salem.

“Patients get the benefit of cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons collaborating across specialties and with a patient’s referring physician to ensure the best options and treatments,” said Dr. Preli. “Patients truly get to know their providers and develop a relationship with us during their journey.”

So whether an individual experiences a sudden heart attack, has a chronic heart condition or needs the latest minimally invasive treatment for Afib or other heart condition, Novant Health has experts in the community.

Best doctors. Amazing nurses. Remarkable care.

Cancer care

This year Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center became one of the only providers in North Carolina to administer improved radiation treatment for patients with brain cancer and prostate cancer patients.

The new technology provides better patient comfort with fewer side effect by targeting several brain cancer cells at once rather than one at a time. For prostate cancer, triggered imaging technology treats tumors in real time and with higher doses. The result? A better patient experience, requiring fewer appointments and less time per appointment.

The latest technology is one key to a positive outcome. But cancer, unlike many other conditions, impacts the whole person. That’s why Novant Health Cancer Institute blends the latest technology and treatments with a system of support that carries through the cancer journey and beyond. This includes access to:

Stroke treatment

Stroke often hits suddenly and often without warning. When this happens, physicians often say “time is brain.” Every minute that treatment is delayed can lead to permanent damage for an individual.

This is why the Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center stroke team consistently delivers rapid response times for diagnosis and treatment of strokes. How fast? The median time from arrival at the ER to treatment is 20 minutes, far ahead of the 30-minute goal set for the nation’s top stroke hospitals. Novant Health’s reputation for response times has been recognized nationally and has improved with the help of imaging capabilities made possible by artificial intelligence.

Clinical trials

Novant Health is also committed to continually improving healthcare by participating in clinical research. Currently, Novant Health has more than 1,500 patients participating in hundreds of clinical trials to benefit other patients in communities throughout the state.

Trials range from heart care to cancer treatment and neurology research. They assist scientists with determining whether a new drug or device can lead to safer treatments and shorter recoveries.

Novant Health appreciates the willingness of patients to participate in clinical trials. Enrolling for a trial is crucial for advancing medical research and helping to save lives. In addition, participants may benefit from treatments they receive as part of the trial.

An important component to patient participation: meeting more patients where they are.

“We’re working to bring our communities the highest level of clinical trial access so our patients don’t have to travel,” said hematologist Franklin Chen, MD, at Novant Health Cancer Institute - Forsyth. “Instead, our patients can spend their time being treated locally.”

It’s clear that Novant Health offers what Triad residents need by offering:

  • Access to high quality, safe healthcare
  • Innovating and evolving technology to improve outcomes
  • Compassionate experts
  • Life-changing and life-saving care
