Innovative options improve care and communication
Innovative thinking was critical when building Novant Health Ballantyne Medical Center. Our designers and care teams looked for the latest technology to enhance patient care.
A modern communication board system
For the first time in the Charlotte area, Novant Health has installed a digital communication board system in each patient room. The boards are updated in real time with the patient’s vital details and care plan progress.
Each patient room TV is integrated into the communication system. There are different sections on the communication board including clinical data, diet information, patient precautions and care team contact information. The TVs also stream relevant education videos. This is designed to be more interactive to promote learning and clarity, and to ensure the patient is comfortable with his or her care team and care plan.
This also improves the accuracy of care, in conjunction with iPads mounted outside patient rooms. With information coming in from the patient’s health records, every member of the care team sees contact information, precautions and updates in real time.
An integrated disinfection system
Disinfection capabilities are integrated into the ceilings of our rooms. There are standard overhead lights, then a separate ring of lights around the room that are UV. When the room is idle, it automatically utilizes UV light to kill microorganisms.
Maternity care with modern conveniences and security
The rooms aims for a feel like hotel suites, with room for a mother, a baby and a significant other. The design is meant to improve patient satisfaction, since they conveniently stay there for labor, birth and recovery. There’s access to a hydrotherapy tub, as well. And with the Hugs security system, every baby is born into a secure environment. Access points to the unit are limited, and if a baby leaves the area with an ankle tag on, the wireless system tracks the bracelet within 3 feet.
Expansion capabilities to accommodate emergency situations and future growth
Each inpatient room is private. However, in the event of an unforeseen event like a mass casualty, they can be converted to double rooms. .
Intermediate care rooms built to ICU standards, so the medical center can eventually offer an ICU. The medical office building is built to hospital standards, as well as an elevator built to an additional floor, so Novant Health is primed to expand the hospital with as little interruption as possible.”
