You've probably read the word "electrolyte" before, but do you know exactly what it is?

According to the National Institutes of Health, electrolytes are essential minerals, such as sodium, calcium, potassium and magnesium that play a key role in controlling nerve and muscle function, rebuilding damaged tissues and much more. Electrolytes help maintain hydration and are particularly important when the body is dehydrated because water alone may not suffice for proper rehydration.

After exercise, especially in the summer when temperatures are soaring, replenishing your electrolytes helps prevent muscle cramps, fatigue and heat-related illnesses.

For electrolyte replenishment along with a refreshing, fruity snack, try these homemade popsicles after your run or workout. They contain mango, a source of beneficial vitamins, polyphenols and dietary fiber, while coconut water provides a natural source of electrolytes including potassium, sodium and magnesium. Sweet and tart, these popsicles are a great post-workout treat for both kids and adults.

Homemade mango electrolyte popsicles

Ingredients

  • 2 cups frozen mango chunks. Due to the size of mango chunks, you'll probably end up with 2 heaping cups
  • 1 1/2 cups coconut water
  • 1 lemon, juiced (about 1/4 cup lemon juice)
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Instructions

  1. Place all the ingredients in a blender. Blend the ingredients on high until smooth. If you don't have a high-speed blender, you may need to add more liquid during the blending process, or wait to blend your ingredients when the mangos are semi-defrosted.
  2. Pour, or spoon, the popsicle mixture into popsicle molds. This recipe makes enough for six popsicles.
  3. Freeze the popsicles for about 12 hours. To remove them from the molds, run each mold under warm water for about 30-40 seconds, then slide the popsicle out of the mold.
