National Nurses Week is a celebration and recognition of the invaluable contributions nurses make to patient care. This is the sixth in a series of stories highlighting a few of the many exceptional nurses at Novant Health, as chosen by their peers for going above and beyond in caring for patients.

Cindy Oldaker has been in nursing for more than 34 years, and she can’t imagine doing anything else! Clearly, her passion, expertise and commitment show in her work with both patients and team members. As the only certified radiology nurse at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, she displays the highest level of job competency and knowledge, according to her colleagues.

And Cindy never hesitates to provide support to any team member, whether it’s a nursing colleague or a member of environmental services. Her dedication to her work and her patients is palpable. This commitment is fueled by her personal integrity, high standards and concern for patient safety while providing the best care possible.

She treats each patient like a family member using kindness, empathy, patience and respect as principles to guide her practice. It’s typical to see her go from one procedure room to the next, inquiring of patients: “Are you okay?” “Do you need anything? or “How can I help?”

With colleagues, she’s equally giving of her experience and time. She’s served as a preceptor for many nurses over her long career and has shared her skills abroad doing mission work to help the less fortunate.

In every respect, Oldaker radiates enthusiasm with a contagious smile, and her warm demeanor is embraced by all – patients, families and colleagues.
