Shallotte – Terri Mozingo, a registered dietician with Brunswick Novant Medical Center, will present a free seminar titled "Helping Parents Prevent Childhood Obesity" at the Brunswick Beacon Health Expo, which will be held at West Brunswick High School on Saturday, February 23.
The childhood obesity rate in Brunswick County is between 15 and 20 percent. With one in three children in North Carolina aged 10 to 17 overweight or obese, our state and nation are facing a serious issue. Often, parents and children are not aware of the issues and solutions for this epidemic. The seminar, which will be held at 10 a.m., is designed for any parent wishing to promote nutrition and a healthy lifestyle in their home.
Childhood obesity is a multi-faceted issue. Terri Mozingo will bring to bear such topics as: What is a healthy weight? Should children be on a calorie-restricted diet? Other topics will include diet vs. lifestyle change, social stigmas and long-term effects of childhood obesity.
The Brunswick Beacon Health Expo will be Saturday, February 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Brunswick Novant Medical Center will offer information a wide variety of healthcare information, as well as blood pressure and cholesterol checks, oxygen saturation testing, balance screenings, body mass index testing and more. Childcare will also be available at the Health Expo.
