CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Dr. Matthew “Max” Carraro and Novant Health Neurology and Sleep have been recognized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) for their commitment to providing comprehensive, multi-disciplinary multiple sclerosis care across the Carolinas and beyond. The formal designation of “Partner in MS Care” is given by NMSS to healthcare providers who not only demonstrate knowledge and expertise, but also a commitment to increasing access to affordable, high-quality MS care regardless of a patient’s geography, disease progression or other disparities
The formalized relationship between Novant Health Neurology and Sleep and the NMSS is key to providing patients with optimal care and support. Through collaboration, networking and information sharing, Carraro has the opportunity and resources to stay current in the rapidly changing world of MS care.

Carraro received his medical degree from Ohio State University College of Medicine in 2011 and conducted his post-doctoral fellowship at OhioHealth under the renowned leadership of Drs. Aaron Boster and Jacqueline Nicholas, nationally recognized MS experts and neuroimmunologists. Carraro moved to Charlotte and joined Novant Health in 2016 with a vision to build and develop a comprehensive multiple sclerosis center for the health system.
“This is not an individual recognition,” Carraro said as he accepted his award on Tuesday. “I couldn’t do what I do if it weren’t for my incredible team, and it’s because of everyone’s efforts that we were able to make this happen in just two short years. It’s incredibly gratifying, and there’s nothing else I’d rather do every day.”
Nick Sullivan, vice president of neurosciences, Novant Health, says Carraro joining the health system was a match made in heaven. “He is truly an expert,” Sullivan said. “This recognition is further proof that Dr. Carraro elevates our capabilities as a health system. He lives out our mission of improving the health of our communities, one person at a time.”
Outside of the office, Carraro enjoys being involved in his community and spending time with his wife and their three children. After moving from Ohio, he and his wife, Ellen, have enjoyed calling Charlotte home. Dr. Ellen Carraro is a bariatric surgeon at Novant Health Bariatric Solutions in Charlotte. Together, they have two girls and one boy, ages nine months, three and five.
Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms vary from person to person and range from numbness and tingling, to walking difficulties, fatigue, dizziness, pain, depression, blindness and paralysis. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. Multiple sclerosis affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide.
