CHARLOTTE, N.C.,– Novant Health announced today that it is launching new investments in the Charlotte community, beginning with providing $300,000 in funding to impact-based programs. Novant Health will focus its charitable contributions and strategic investments on improving outcomes in three areas: health and human services, environment and education.
“Novant Health has a long history of being engaged in the communities we serve, so that as we heal bodies, we’re also healing neighborhoods, cities and regions,” said Dr. Andrew Mueller, senior vice president of Novant Health and president of the greater Charlotte market.
With an intentional focus on our most vulnerable populations, Novant Health’s goal is to create equal access to excellent healthcare while removing healthcare disparities and delivering health equity to our communities.
“We seek to improve overall health and create positive change throughout our communities, affecting awareness, access and behaviors in the most vulnerable populations. The impact of our investments will be felt in the daily lives of all members of the Charlotte community,” said Mueller.
Through the health and human services investment priority, Novant Health seeks to improve the health of individuals by promoting health, healing and treatment in response to identified community health needs.
"The support from Novant has helped accelerate ChemoCars program growth and expansion. In about 1.5 years, ChemoCars has provided over 6,000 free rides to and from cancer treatment and expanded its footprint to two cities,” said Zach Bolster, co-founder and executive director of ChemoCars. “We’re honored to be selected as a funding beneficiary and proud to help improve patient access to life-saving cancer treatment."
Novant Health supports safe and clean communities by focusing on housing, neighborhoods and food. Funding under the priority of environment will support increasing food access, security and nutrition education, support sustainable, positive neighborhood change and revitalization, and promote active lifestyles and behaviors.
Through investments in education, Novant Health is supporting early childhood development and building the pipeline for the future of the healthcare workforce. Novant Health's funding provides job shadowing experiences in the healthcare and allied science fields through the career pathways program.
“Many individuals wouldn’t think about a pair of scrubs, a flat tire or a book fee for class as being a critical barrier to success. But for the students served by MeckEd’s Career Pathways program, these are just a few of the many obstacles they will face as they work toward a better future,” explained Shelly Biby, director of development for MeckEd. “Novant Health’s support has had an immediate impact on the students we serve. By investing in Career Pathways programming, Novant has made a commitment to removing these and the hundreds of additional barriers to success our students face. The organizations and programs being supported as part of the launch of Novant Health’s new investment priorities include: Care Ring, Charlotte Speech and Hearing Center, ChemoCars, Girl Talk, HeartBright Foundation, Mental Health of America of Central Carolinas, MeckEd, Junior Achievement of Central Carolinas, QC Scores, Real School Gardens, Reach Out and Read Carolinas, Renaissance West Community Initiative and the Howard Levine Child Development Center, Safe Alliance, STEMersion, Time Out Youth and TreesCharlotte.
