Novant Health Cancer Institute stands as a cornerstone of excellence, part of an integrated network of 19 hospitals and 900 care locations in North and South Carolina. With more than 41,000 team members, including more than 8,600 independent and employed physicians, Novant Health has established itself as an industry leader in oncology care.
A key aspect of Novant Health’s oncology care is grounded in the principle that patients should receive expert care closer to home. Novant Health achieves this by offering team-based, specialized care with a comprehensive portfolio of innovative oncology therapy and clinical trial options, specialized oncology programs and recognition by external medical accreditations from the American College of Surgeons; the Commission on Cancer; National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers’ breast program; National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer’s rectal program; Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT); and a Magnet designation. All recognize excellence in patient-centered care and nursing.
“What I wish referring physicians to take away from the Novant Health Cancer Institute is that we are here for all their patients’ needs,” said David Rizzieri, MD, physician in chief, Novant Health Cancer Institute.
“Our team of specialists works together in a collaborative fashion to provide the most advanced treatment options. We’re really focused on their illness and ensuring that they have access to all of the things they need to have the best experience.”

Your patients have options close to home.
One example of the advanced therapeutic options offered at Novant Health is cellular immunotherapy. Patients can access agents most recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration, such as tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy for melanoma, in which Novant Health was previously involved in establishing the efficacy of this treatment in a phase 3 clinical trial.
In addition, Novant Health’s offerings in CAR-T and NK cell therapies continue to expand, with ongoing clinical trials targeting hematologic and solid cancers. Novant Health Cancer Institute is among the first to provide these clinical trial therapies. For example, Novant Health was the lead center and first site worldwide to offer a new CAR-T agent targeting CLL-1 for AML (acute myeloid leukemia) when the ARD103 clinical trial was first activated by ARCE Therapeutics.
Novant Health was also the first program in the state to offer a histotripsy program to patients with liver lesions with high potential for expansion. The program will launch in November 2025 and has plans to extend its application to other tumor types in the future. Additional oncology initiatives for high-risk patients include the rapid lung nodule management program and the pancreatic cancer screening initiative between Novant Health, Gastroenterology Associates of the Piedmont PA and Digestive Health Specialists PA. The lung nodule program enables high-risk patients to be evaluated and biopsied within two weeks of screening, significantly reducing treatment delays. Similarly, the pancreatic screening program links patients to a genetic counseling team and a local multispecialty pancreatic cancer screening program if the patient is determined to be at increased risk.
Efforts to strengthen the surgical oncology services at Novant Health have taken the form of a newly established complex genitourinary surgical program, which offers comprehensive, coordinated care to patients with prostate, kidney or bladder cancers, streamlining treatment pathways from diagnosis to post-treatment follow-up. The program was designed to integrate with existing radiation and medical oncology services at Novant Health to create a seamless continuum of care.
As Novant Health continues to advance cancer care, many specialists live in the area or spend rotations working with the system through domestic medical tourism. Novant Health remains dedicated to offering hope and unparalleled expertise, delivering the best care possible closer to where patients live.
