His face is the first patients see, and always with a smile.

Rayvon Mitchell is a greeter at Novant Health Derrick L. Davis Cancer Institute in Winston-Salem, where he warmly welcomes patients throughout their cancer journeys, from treatment to recovery.

“It’s an honor for me to be at the door,” said Mitchell, who takes pride in helping escort patients from their vehicles to treatment.

A cancer survivor himself, Mitchell puts patients at ease, treating everyone with sensitivity during what is often a scary and stressful time.

“Rayvon has been a good friend,” said patient Andy Matthews of East Bend, N.C. “He’s so positive and uplifting, and always takes time to say hello to everybody.”

Novant Health Derrick L. Davis Cancer Center is one of the largest cancer treatment facilities in the southern United States. It offers comprehensive and personalized care, including stem cell transplants, cellular therapy and participation in clinical trials. One of its many perks is Mitchell’s familiar greeting at the door.

“My favorite part of the job is meeting all my patients,” Mitchell said. “It feels like I’m doing something to help them out.”
