Bolivia, N.C. – Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center recently opened a new sleep center that offers diagnostic services for a full range of sleep disorders. The two-bed sleep center is located on the second floor of Brunswick Medical Center.
Registered technicians perform polysomnography testing, which records brain waves, blood oxygen levels, heart rate and breathing. Studies are then interpreted by Novant Health’s board-certified sleep physician, Dr. Babysarojah Ravindran. Ravindran also specializes in pulmonary disease.
“People should consider speaking with their provider about their quality of sleep,” said Mike Crabb, systems manager of sleep services for Novant Health and licensed respiratory care practitioner. “If you’re having trouble sleeping, don’t assume you should just take a sleep aid to fall asleep. There could be underlying disorders that could put you in danger. You really need to bring up your sleep issues with your provider.”
Patients can be tested for various sleep disorders, including:
- Sleep apnea
- Insomnia
- Narcolepsy
- Restless limb disorder
Patients will be hooked up to medical equipment to help measure brain activity, arm and leg movement, respiratory and heart function. “It’s a completely painless experience,” Crabb said. “A lot of people worry they won’t sleep, but even if patients don’t get a full night of rest, sleep conditions will still show up.”
A physician referral is required to participate in a sleep study.
If you think you'd be a good candidate for a sleep study, please speak with your primary care provider.
