WILMINGTON, N.C. – Exceptional care has inspired a family to make a generous gift to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation to support hematology and oncology patients.
A Wilmington family that asked to remain unnamed has pledged $500,000 to provide additional services to support patients at Novant Health Zimmer Cancer Institute. This gift will fund program enhancements for hematology/oncology services, such as patient navigation and case management to help directly support patients undergoing cancer treatment.
“We are profoundly grateful to this family for their generous gift, and it is especially touching that they were motivated by a positive care experience to help support future patients,” said Schorr Davis, the foundation’s executive director.
Patient navigators help connect patients with resources and serve as a link between the patient and their care teams, supporting them along their treatment journeys. This gift launched a new fund at the foundation, which can be used to provide educational support for team members and community education and outreach focused on patient navigation.
“We are so honored by this gift from a family that expressed their appreciation for the care provided by Dr. Anthony Dominick and the Zimmer Cancer Institute team,” said Dr. Michael Papagikos, clinical physician executive for the Novant Health Cancer Institute-Coastal region. “We are proud of the care we provide the region, but never more so than when we receive the sincere gratitude from a patient and their family.”
Zimmer Cancer Institute offers patient-centered services including social and financial support, nutritional counseling and support, and patient navigation and survivorship care support. Earlier this year, the American Cancer Society awarded Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center the inaugural Health System/Patient Support Team of the Year Award for 2021, a national honor presented in recognition of achievements in improving the lives of cancer patients and their families.
