THOMASVILLE, N.C. – Today, leaders at Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center gathered with members of the community to celebrate the groundbreaking of the future Novant Health Wellness and Education building in Thomasville. The multi-use health care facility is part of Novant Health’s strategic plan to enhance the overall health of the community by addressing several health equity challenges – gaps in accessible care – facing patients across the region, specifically related to behavioral health, substance use disorder, chronic disease management and rehabilitative care. The 18,000 square-foot facility is scheduled to open in 2025 and will be housed in the former health department building on the edge of Thomasville Medical Center’s campus.

“We know that 80% of chronic medical issues are preventable with lifestyle changes,” said Jon Applebaum, president and chief operating officer of Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center. “Our goal with this new wellness and education building is to connect with our patients sooner to help them lead healthier lives. The team, in partnership with the patient and their primary care provider, will focus on the prevention and management of complex medical conditions before they have a chance to worsen and require more advanced hospital-based care.”

Thanks to the generosity of donors through Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center Foundation, which provided $2 million in philanthropic support toward the project, the current building will undergo a significant renovation and transform into a modern medical facility that’s well-positioned to tackle the community’s most pressing health needs.

Enhancing health outcomes

The new wellness and education building will offer the following services:

Mental health: Novant Health is committed to improving access to outpatient mental health care services across the Triad. The future wellness and education facility will house Novant Health’s first outpatient intensive therapy program in Davidson County. This program will allow patients in need of partial hospitalization to receive care during the day and go home in the evening. The facility will also have psychiatry offices, group therapy programs and substance use disorder programs.

Chronic disease management: Novant Health is focused on helping patients with chronic diseases lead healthy lives outside of the hospital. The future wellness and education building will dedicate 7,000-square-feet to preventing and treating chronic illness like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), congestive heart failure, obesity and diabetes. Patients will also benefit from the on-site kitchen for nutrition and education classes, smoking cessation support and a diabetes management program.

Physical rehabilitation: Thomasville Medical Center offers the latest in advanced orthopedic surgical care in Davidson County. The new wellness facility will enhance the continuum of care for these patients by including a brand-new physical rehabilitation gym, which will offer both individual and group therapy.

Community outreach and education: The new wellness and education building will house a conference space for community education opportunities around chronic disease prevention, nutrition and exercise. The space will also host senior programs, group exercise classes and a Baby Café, which is a nursing mother’s support program.
