Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center opens heart and vascular lab, expands access to Kernersville and Greensboro

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – Today, Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center invited community members to tour its recently installed heart and vascular lab, scheduled to open for patients April 11. The lab will bring brand-new cardiovascular diagnostic and interventional procedures to the hospital, improving access to lifesaving care and treatment for patients in Kernersville and west Guilford County.

“We’re very excited to introduce our new heart and vascular lab to this community,” said Kirsten Royster, president and chief operating officer of Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center. “While Kernersville is affectionately referred to as the ‘heart of the Triad,’ our patients, outside of routine visits with their cardiologist, have historically had to travel to either Greensboro or Winston-Salem for planned cardiac procedures. This was an inconvenient barrier to care for our patients, and a driving factor behind our decision to establish a heart and vascular lab here in Kernersville. Now our patients can access all their cardiovascular care, including advanced treatment and planned procedures, at a location that’s close to home.”

The state-of-the-art lab, which will include eight patient rooms for pre-and-post procedural care, is conveniently located on the first floor of the hospital. The lab will provide diagnostic catheterization and stenting procedures, designed to detect and clear any blocked arteries around the heart. Additionally, the lab is designed to implant cardiac rhythm devices, such as pacemakers and defibrillators. The lab will also perform a variety of vascular procedures to restore blood flow to the limbs, usually the legs, which is often a result of peripheral vascular disease, a narrowing of blood vessels.

“Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States and around the world,” said Dr. Zan Tyson, medical director of Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center’s Heart & Vascular Institute. “Unfortunately, our community is not immune. The goal of this new lab is to serve as an important care extension of our area clinic locations, offering patients enhanced access to the latest in advanced diagnostic and treatment services right here in this community.”

The addition of the new heart and vascular lab is phase 1 of Kernersville Medical Center’s ongoing $55 million expansion project, which also includes expanding the hospital’s intensive care unit and adding a new fourth-floor birthing center in early 2024. This will be the first time maternity care services have been offered at Kernersville Medical Center.

Kernersville Medical Center opened in 2011, providing an option for patients who previously had to travel to Greensboro or Winston-Salem for health care. The hospital has expanded several times over the years to bring new and dedicated services to the area, including cancer, orthopedics, women’s health, neurosciences and the latest in robotic-assisted surgery.
