Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center named robotic surgery center of excellence

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center recently achieved accreditation from SRC as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery. This accreditation by SRC, a nonprofit patient safety organization, recognizes New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s commitment to patient safety and providing the latest in high quality robotic-assisted surgery for complex gynecological, urological and general surgery procedures, which are performed using the da Vinci surgical system.

Unlike traditional surgery, the da Vinci surgical system allows surgeons to perform a variety of robotic assisted minimally invasive procedures, often resulting in less pain and blood loss, minimal scarring and shorter recovery times.

Status as an accredited Center of Excellence means that New Hanover Regional Medical Center has met nationally and internationally recognized standards for safety, high-quality surgical care and optimal patient outcomes.

“We’re very proud to be recognized as a leader in providing the latest in advanced robotic-assisted surgery for our patients in this community,” said Dr. Timothy Chase, a urogynecologist and chair of robotics committee at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. “This accreditation is a testament not only to the cutting-edge technology we have available, but also to our expert surgical team members who perform more than 1,700 da Vinci-assisted procedures each year in our region."

Health care facilities seeking an SRC accreditation undergo an extensive assessment process which includes review of surgical volumes, facility equipment, clinical pathways, standardized operating procedures, patient education and a commitment to continuous quality assessment.

“We’re proud to recognize Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center for its commitment to advancing and providing quality care for all patients,” said Gary M. Pratt, CEO of SRC. “This accreditation signals that this facility is among the best in this specialty and is dedicated to delivering the highest level of care possible.”

Robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery

Meanwhile, Novant Health has made a significant investment in bringing the latest in robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery to patients in southeastern North Carolina. Since 2022, the health care system has installed two surgical robots at Novant Health New Hanover Orthopedic Hospital and one at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center. These robots are specifically designed to assist with knee and hip replacement surgery.

“We perform more than 9,000 orthopedic surgeries in the Wilmington region each year,” said Grant Rush, vice president cardiovascular and surgical services for the Novant Health Coastal region. “Of those, more than 2,000 are joint-related procedures. Today, most knee replacement cases can benefit from the latest in robotic-assisted surgery. Unlike conventional surgery, this new technology allows our surgeons to perform incredibly precise procedures, resulting in better outcomes and shorter recovery times.”

Most insurance companies now also cover the cost of robotic-assisted partial and total knee replacement procedures.

Over the years, Novant Health has established itself as an industry leader in providing comprehensive and specialized orthopedic and sports medicine care. New Hanover Orthopedic Hospital is designated as a Blue Distinction Center+ in Knee and Hip Replacements by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina.

This designation demonstrates that the hospital is committed to high quality, good outcomes, lower rates of complications and cost efficiency. Outside of joint replacements, the hospital also specializes in hand and shoulder, foot and ankle, spine and sports medicine care.
