Grant from the Charles A. Cannon Charitable Trusts to fund 3-D mammography at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center
Salisbury, N.C., August 11, 2015 - The Novant Health Foundation Rowan Medical Center has received a $250,000 grant from the Charles A. Cannon Charitable Trusts to help purchase 3-D mammogram technology for Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.
3-D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, is used as a complement to standard digital mammography. It provides physicians with a more detailed view of the breast to help identify potential problems that may not be visible on standard mammography. Not only has 3-D mammography been shown to increase cancer detection rates by 41 percent, it can also reduce the need for additional imaging and biopsies by 40 percent. The technology is especially beneficial for women with dense breasts or for those at high risk to develop breast cancer.
According to the 2013 State of the County Health Report, the 2011 breast cancer mortality rate in Rowan County was 34 percent, well above the North Carolina state average of 26 percent.
"We know that early detection greatly increases the rate of survival for breast cancer patients," said Dari Caldwell, president of Rowan Medical Center. "As a survivor myself, the Cannon grant means so much because it will help us bring a vital diagnostic tool to the women in our community."
Additional funds for the mammography unit will be raised through the Novant Health Foundation Rowan Medical Center's fall fundraising gala, the Patrons' Ball and an employee giving campaign. The unit will be located in the Breast Health Center located on the campus of the Novant Health Rowan Medical Park on Julian Road at 514 Corporate Circle, Salisbury, North Carolina.
The 25th annual Patrons' Ball will be held Saturday, Sept. 12 in the Crystal Lounge at Catawba College from 7 pm to 12 am. The formal event is Great Gatsby themed and Gatsby attire is encouraged that evening. Entertainment will be provided by the Salisbury Swing Band and Virtual Sounds, and local cuisine will be prepared by Best Impressions. A raffle of a 14k gold diamond tennis bracelet donated by K-Dee's Jewelers will also be held. General admission tickets can be purchased for $125, with all proceeds helping to fund the mammography unit.
Traditional mammograms are currently available at the Breast Health Center five days a week or on Novant Health's mobile mammography coach. The mobile mammography coach is available at various Rowan County locations several days a month and features digital mammography technology, all female technicians, a private changing area and a separate clinical exam room.
