WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – As part of its commitment to creating a healthier future for patients and communities, Novant Health is strengthening its regional approach to care transformation by appointing three proven leaders to expanded roles in North Carolina, focused on advancing access to high-quality, affordable care while supporting strategic growth. Leadership in its South Carolina region remains the same.
“With deep ties to these communities, each of these leaders will keep local needs at the center of focus while allowing for continued strategic growth,” said John Gizdic, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Novant Health. “By aligning regional, clinical and enterprise leaders more closely, we are creating stronger connections and enabling agility across our system to drive remarkable, patient-centered care, ultimately strengthening how we serve our patients and communities.”
Leadership updates, effective June 1, include:
Chris Bowe is now senior vice president and regional president of the Charlotte Region. Bowe was most recently senior vice president and president of the Novant Health Triad Region. He has nearly 30 years of diverse healthcare experience, including previously leading Advocate Health’s Charlotte market as well as holding various leadership roles with the health system over the span of eight years. Bowe also held leadership roles with CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System; KentuckyOne Health/Saint Joseph Health System and University of Kentucky HealthCare. He holds a master’s degree in healthcare administration from the University of Arizona Global Campus, a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from the University of Kentucky and a bachelor’s degree in business administration-finance from the University of Kentucky.
Alisha Hutchens is now senior vice president and regional president of the Triad Region. She continues to serve as president of Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center and Novant Health Medical Park Hospital until a new leader is appointed. With more than 17 years of experience at Novant Health, Hutchens brings a variety of experience to this new role, having served as the president of Novant Health Clemmons Medical Center and chief operating officer of Forsyth Medical Center. She also has extensive leadership experience in supply chain, strategic sourcing and finance. Hutchens holds a master’s degree in business administration from Liberty University and a bachelor’s degree in business from Appalachian State University.
Laurie Whalin, PharmD, is now senior vice president and regional president of the Coastal Region. She continues to serve as president, Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Whalin has more than 15 years of leadership experience serving Coastal North Carolina and New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Her prior roles include serving as president and chief operating officer of Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center and vice president of clinical services at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Campbell University and a bachelor’s degree in marine biology from the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
Jason Bernd will continue to serve as senior vice president and regional president of the South Carolina Region. Bernd joined Novant Health in 2006. His previous roles include president and chief operating officer of Novant Health Matthews Medical Center and Novant Health Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital. He also held leadership roles in financial planning and analysis, heart and vascular care, cancer services and the Novant Health Medical Group. Bernd holds a master’s degree in business administration from Stanford University and bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from University of Virginia.
