Novant Health unveils new mobile mammography unit to support early breast cancer detection across southeastern North Carolina

Novant Health has rolled out a brand-new mobile mammography unit to provide equitable and easy access to breast cancer screenings at convenient locations and during community events to help save lives.

The new unit supports Novant Health's ongoing goal to reduce disparities in breast cancer screeningsWhile mammograms are already available at physical locations around the region, providing mobile access adds more convenient options for individuals who lack transportation or live in rural areas, for example.

“This mobile unit physically represents our commitment to increasing access to breast cancer screenings and reducing disparities in outcomes,” said Ernie Bovio, president of the Novant Health Coastal region and Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. “We want to do everything we can to make breast cancer screenings readily available to everyone who needs them. Early detection greatly improves treatment options and is proven to save lives.”

Novant Health recommends women begin routine breast cancer screening at age 40, possibly earlier for those at higher risk.

The new unit was purchased thanks to generous financial support from the Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation.

“We were delighted to support this project to ensure continued access to needed mobile mammography services," said Ann Caulkins, senior vice president of Novant Health and president of the Novant Health foundations. “We welcome continued philanthropic support toward this worthy effort from those who share our vision to offer a convenient option to get a screening mammogram."

Donors to the foundation's The Pink Ribbon Project can directly support continued access to screening mammograms in southeastern North Carolina. Anyone can give online at SupportNovantHealth.org

The mobile unit features the latest 3-D technology. During the 3-D mammogram, an X-ray tube takes multiple low-dose images that are regenerated by a computer. The angled images provide 1-millimeter-thin snapshots of the breast tissues that, collectively, provide radiologists with a detailed, three-dimensional view.
