Bolivia, N.C. – Brunswick Novant Medical Center now offers a wide range of surgical procedures for the spine, including treatments for conditions such as lumbar spinal stenosis, herniated discs, spine fractures, and adult deformity such as spondylolisthesis.
Board-certified orthopaedic surgeon Mark Foster, MD, joined the hospital's medical staff in 2012 and has already performed a number of spine surgeries at the hospital.
"The entire surgical staff at Brunswick Novant Medical Center has been great to work with as we've brought these new surgical procedures to the hospital and to the community," said Dr. Foster. "Many of my patients think they may have to drive out of the county for the surgical procedures they need. It is always refreshing to tell them that they can stay close to home and receive the care they need."
Surgical procedures for the spine performed by Dr. Foster include: kyphoplasty, a procedure to repair damaged vertebra; minimally-invasive lumbar decompression and lumbar laminectomy for spinal stenosis; lumbar microdiscectomy to remove a herniated disk; nerve root decompression; and lumbar decompression and fusion.
"Surgery is not always needed for all spine conditions," Dr. Foster said. "We will first consider all non-surgical treatments, which might include medication, physical therapy or injection therapy. The good news is that if back surgery is needed, these procedures have advanced tremendously and the recovery is much better than how once perceived."
Dr. Foster received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C., and also went on to complete his internship and residency at the university. He completed fellowships with the NC Spine Center in Chapel Hill, and the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wis. During these fellowships, Dr. Foster completed his specialization in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal diseases and conditions as well as the foot and ankle. Dr. Foster is currently a physician with Orthopaedic Specialists, which has offices in Southport, Supply, Leland and Sunset Beach.
