Strong financial stewardship drives high-quality care, expanded access, team development and long-term sustainability at Novant Health

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Novant Health today announced audited financial results for the year ending Dec. 31, 2025, reporting $1.2 billion of net income, or excess of revenues over expenses, on operating revenues of almost $12 billion.

The fiscal year 2025 net income included $576.6 million in operating income and $586.3 million in nonoperating income, which includes investment income.

“In an environment shaped by significant headwinds, we continue to prioritize access, affordability, innovation and remarkable patient care,” said Alice Pope, executive vice president and chief financial officer, Novant Health. “As a nonprofit health system, our commitment to care for every patient, regardless of ability to pay, is unwavering. By adapting to regulatory changes, expanding ambulatory and alternative care options, and practicing strong financial stewardship, we are positioning ourselves to deliver high-quality care today and well into the future.”

As part of that commitment, Novant Health expanded its financial assistance eligibility criteria in 2025 for patients receiving care at its North Carolina hospitals and outpatient hospital departments. To further support patients and help them anticipate, plan for and navigate care costs, the health system also introduced an affordability hub to help individuals compare care options, understand estimated costs and make informed financial decisions. Additional options are available to all patients to help manage, reduce or eliminate out‑of‑pocket costs when appropriate, including financial navigators, price estimator tools and interest‑free payment plans.

In 2025, Novant Health provided more than $2.1 billion in total community benefit, including financial assistance and the unpaid cost of Medicare and Medicaid.

Novant Health also took a significant step forward to ensure the communities it serves thrive for generations to come by advancing its commitment to long-term sustainability. The health system entered into a 30‑year Energy-as-a-Service partnership with ENFRA, unlocking $839 million in value from its energy infrastructure that can be reinvested directly into patient care – all while reducing utility costs through modern, energy-efficient upgrades.

Investing in communities

In 2025, Novant Health continued its commitment to strengthening the health of our communities through strategic investments, partnerships, and expanded access to care across the region.

To improve timely access to mental health services for young people, Novant Health announced a $2.5 million investment in the Katie Blessing Center to create a comprehensive adolescent behavioral health urgent care (BHUC) in Charlotte. Opening later this year, the dedicated space will provide quick intervention for the nearly one in four children and adolescents experiencing mental, emotional or behavioral health disorders, ensuring they receive the right care when they need it most.

Novant Health brought care even closer to residents by opening a family medicine clinic inside the YMCA REACH Center at Winston Lake. The new Novant Health Winston Lake Family Medicine clinic offers convenient access to routine primary care, sick and injury care, chronic disease management and on‑site X‑ray and lab services for patients ages 5 and older.

Recognizing that physicians are most likely to practice where they train, Novant Health also launched a rural track within its family medicine residency program to support communities in the Coastal Region. In partnership with Black River Health Services, the organizations celebrated the expansion of the Burgaw clinic, which now serves as the program’s home base. The added space increases access to care across the region and supports training the next generation of physicians in rural communities, an important investment in community‑based healthcare and a critical step toward addressing the primary care shortage.

In 2025, Novant Health also announced a transformative workforce housing development to support Hilton Head Island’s essential service workers, including healthcare professionals and first responders. Addressing the critical need for affordable housing, this initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to community well‑being and to strengthening the workforce that powers healthcare and other vital service industries. Made possible through strong local partnerships and innovative building approaches, the project aligns with Hilton Head Island’s Workforce Housing Framework and reinforces Novant Health’s role in fostering sustainable, community‑driven growth.

Expanding access to care

With facilities consistently recognized for safety and quality by national organizations including The Leapfrog Group, Vizient and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Novant Health continues to expand access to high‑quality, affordable care across the Carolinas through strategic partnerships, new facilities and enhanced services.

Expanding accessible care also includes innovative clinical offerings, such as the growing Virtual Menopause Wellness Clinic, launched in 2025 and now supported by more than 15 clinicians providing convenient, private virtual visits across the Coastal, Charlotte and Triad regions.

Last April, Novant Health, in collaboration with MedQuest Associates, acquired 18 OrthoCarolina imaging locations in a continued effort to enhance affordable imaging services across the Carolinas.

Novant Health also began working with PT Solutions, which acquired OrthoCarolina’s physical therapy division, to enhance access to high-quality rehabilitation services.

In the Triad, Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center opened a new five‑story tower, advancing surgical, heart and critical care capabilities. Additional investments across the region included expanded adult and pediatric after‑hours care in Clemmons, new colorectal specialty care access in Kernersville, and expanded orthopedic access with the introduction of Saturday walk‑in care in Winston‑Salem. In Asheboro, Novant Health increased orthopedic and pain management services, and, together with Randolph Health, opened a heart and vascular lab to improve access to advanced cardiac care.

In the Charlotte Region, Novant Health opened a concierge primary care clinic designed to deliver personalized, always‑on care to members. The system also advanced its clinical capabilities with an expansion at Novant Health Matthews Medical Center and the opening of a new critical care tower. At Novant Health Mint Hill Medical Center, an expanded emergency department now offers increased capacity and improved access for the region’s growing patient demand.

Major groundbreakings included a new Center for Women’s Health at East Cooper Medical Center, West Ashley Internal Medicine clinic, medical office and emergency department projects in Summerville and Bluffton, as well as a new emergency department on Daniel Island and the system’s first medical campus in the Upstate. Approvals were also secured for a new 20‑bed hospital in Greenville, and Novant Health Bluffton Medical Center, a 50‑bed hospital, is scheduled to open in 2028. Novant Health also added eight new primary care providers across Hilton Head, Bluffton and Okatie, and expanded specialty and surgical care offerings in the region, including expert spine care in the Charleston area with the addition of the Southeastern Spine Institute.

Along the North Carolina coast, Novant Health began construction on a new surgery center in the fast‑growing Leland area and announced plans for a new hospital in Leland and a freestanding emergency department in Carolina Shores.

Novant Health received certificate of need application approval to build a 20-bed hospital, Novant Health Leland Medical Center, near the Compass Pointe community. The hospital will include a 24/7 emergency department, imaging services, 10 observation beds and five procedure rooms.

Novant Health also received certificate of need approval to build a separate free-standing emergency department in Brunswick County near U.S. 17 in Carolina Shores.

Additional investments at Novant Health’s community hospital in Bolivia will further expand care across Brunswick County. Novant Health also established an affiliation with Leighton Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Supply, enhancing orthopedic care options for residents across coastal North Carolina.

Western North Carolina also saw significant growth with the opening of Novant Health Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and the expansion of women’s health offerings with the launch of Novant Health Women’s Specialty Care. In addition, Asheville Endocrinology Consultants officially joined the Novant Health network, strengthening specialty care access across the region.

Advancing care

Novant Health advanced its commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care for every patient. Those advances included:

  • Novant Health became the first healthcare system in the Carolinas to offer histotripsy, a groundbreaking treatment for cancers involving the liver that does not require surgery.
  • Novant Health Cancer Institute is at the forefront of advanced cellular therapies, an innovative form of immunotherapy that is transforming cancer treatments. By tapping into the power of a patient’s own immune system, these therapies help slow or stop cancer growth while strengthening the body’s natural defenses against abnormal cells.
  • Using O-Arm 360 3D imaging, Novant Health provides advanced 3D intraoperative imaging technology, including systems that enable 360-degree, real-time imaging for spine neurological procedures. These high-resolution images taken during surgery improve precision and reduce the need for follow-up procedures.
  • Novant Health Heart & Vascular Institute now offers a minimally invasive procedure to treat resistant hypertension.
  • Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital began construction on a pediatric intermediate care unit, that will expand access to the highest level of care for patients who are no longer critically ill, but still need closer medical observation, continued testing, and additional organ support.
  • Novant Health Cancer Institute was the first in the nation to introduce RapidArc Dynamic, next-generation radiation therapy that allows care teams to plan and deliver treatments with even greater accuracy, speed and safety across a wide range of cancer types.
  • Novant Health launched a new pancreatic cancer screening program in the Triad, aimed at boosting early detection.
  • Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center began offering patients a leading-edge pacemaker, through a minimally invasive procedure.
  • New orthopedic robotic precision arrived at Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center, offering patients convenient access to the latest innovation in joint replacement surgery.

Investing in team members and next generation of healthcare professionals

As Novant Health continues to grow and expand access to care across the region, the organization is also strengthening its commitment to recruiting, retaining and developing the physicians and care teams who will deliver that care.

In the past five years, Novant Health has invested $1.5 billion in team member pay increases and incentives, along with expansions to tuition reimbursement and career path planning tools. In 2025, the system awarded more than $300 million in pay increases and bonuses to team members, building on the health system’s nearly $250 million team member compensation in 2024.

In 2025, Novant Health also deepened its investment in the training and career advancement of its nearly 44,000 team members with the launch of a new debt‑free education program, Novant Health Future Forward. The program’s pre‑paid tuition benefits, allowing team members to complete full undergraduate or graduate degrees with select academic partners at minimal cost, are among the most generous educational benefits offered by healthcare systems across the Carolinas. This transformational initiative builds on a series of strategic investments supporting internal mobility and team member well‑being.
