WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Novant Health and Birmingham-based HealthSouth Corporation will host a community groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate their joint venture hospital, which is expected to open to patients in October 2018. The event will be held on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 10 a.m. at the site of the future hospital located at 2475 Hillcrest Center Circle in Winston-Salem.

The event will feature a ceremonial groundbreaking and presentation remarks by Anita Prendergast, CEO of the future inpatient rehabilitation hospital; Dr. James McLean, medical director of the future inpatient rehabilitation hospital; Dr. Stephen Motew, president of Novant Health’s Winston-Salem market; Jeanette Lawson-Jackson, secretary and treasurer of the Mayor’s Council for Persons with Disabilities; and Mark Tarr, president and CEO of HealthSouth Corporation.

The freestanding inpatient rehabilitation hospital will offer 68 private patient rooms including one bariatric isolation room, two additional bariatric rooms and 16 rooms equipped for patients needing dialysis treatment during their stay. Also included in the 68,702-square-foot hospital will be a spacious therapy gym, courtyard, dining and dayroom areas. The construction cost of the project is approximately $19 million. Doster Construction Company is serving as the general contractor for the project.

“This hospital has been designed with our patients’ needs in mind and will offer the latest technologies that will be incorporated into their therapy sessions to provide them with the strongest outcomes possible,” said Prendergast. “We appreciate the support we’ve received and look forward to helping many people return to the community and the activities they love.”

Patient care is expected to transition from its current location at 3333 Silas Creek Parkway on the campus of Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center to the new rehabilitation hospital upon completion. The hospital will provide comprehensive physical rehabilitation to patients who have experienced stroke, trauma, brain and orthopedic injuries, or other major illnesses or injuries.
