BOLIVIA, N.C. – Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center is now offering cardiac calcium scoring for only $99 to help detect heart disease earlier. A cardiac score is a noninvasive, quick and simple CT scan that detects calcium buildup, or plaque, in the arteries and detects the risk for heart disease and a future cardiac event. Cardiac calcium scoring may also be covered by insurance.
“We are thrilled to now offer cardiac calcium scoring to the Brunswick County community,” said Robin Ashmore, manager of radiology at Brunswick Medical Center. “Early detection is important for preventing and fighting heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the United States.”
A cardiac score is recommended for women ages 55 to 75, men ages 45 to 75 and those at risk for heart disease due to factors like family history and lifestyle.
There are several risk factors for heart disease. While some factors can’t be controlled — like age, gender and family history — making lifestyle changes can reduce the chance of heart disease. Risk factors include:
- Smoking
- High cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Physical inactivity
- Obesity
- Uncontrolled diabetes
The cardiac calcium scoring exam requires a physician referral and takes 15 minutes to complete. All exams will be performed at Brunswick Medical Center, located at 240 Hospital Drive NE in Bolivia, North Carolina.
