BOLIVIA, N.C. – Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center has partnered with New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Cape Fear Heart Associates to provide much-needed diagnostic cardiac catheterizations to the Brunswick County community. The mobile diagnostic cardiac catheterizations will be performed by Cape Fear Heart Associates’ Dr. Joshua Winslow twice a month at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center starting mid-April.
“Before this partnership, patients had to drive up to an hour to have this procedure,” Winslow said. “I’m excited about this opportunity to work with Novant Health to provide more access to cardiac care in the Brunswick community. I think this is the first step of many to provide more advanced cardiac care for those in Brunswick County.”
A diagnostic cardiac catheterization is a minimally invasive procedure that involves passing a catheter (a thin, flexible tube) through blood vessels to the heart. The procedure is used to tell how well a heart is functioning and to diagnose any possible cardiac disease. Winslow will use findings from the procedure to inform patients of any conditions that might require future cardiac treatment and intervention. For example, if Winslow observes any blockages, he would refer patients to an interventional cardiologist for a coronary stent to open up the arteries for proper blood flow.
Winslow is board-certified in nuclear cardiology, cardiovascular medicine and internal medicine. He earned his bachelor’s degree of science in biology from Hobart College in Geneva, New York. Winslow received his doctor of medicine degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He completed his an internal medicine residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu and a cardiovascular medicine fellowship at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.
