Novant Health welcomes new vascular surgeon, Dr. Rebecca Kelso

CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 15, 2018 Novant Health is pleased to welcome Dr. Rebecca Kelso, vascular surgeon, to Novant Health Heart and Vascular Institute in Charlotte. The clinic, located at 301 Hawthorne Lane, Suite 200, is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Kelso is a native of Waxhaw, North Carolina, and was born at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte. She received her undergraduate degree in chemistry from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, and went on to pursue a medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Kelso completed a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in vascular surgery and is skilled in the treatment of peripheral vascular disease, including endovascular therapy and urgent surgery.

Before joining Novant Health, Kelso was a vascular surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland. She was also an assistant professor at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, where she was actively involved in trainee education for 10 years. She served as the assistant program director for the vascular surgery residency program from 2013 until 2018, when she joined Novant Health. While her treatment of vascular disease is focused on vascular surgery, Kelso enjoys the long-term relationship that is unique to vascular surgery.

Vascular surgery is the surgical management of the body’s circulatory system (arteries and veins). Artery diseases that may require a vascular surgeon include patients who have a dilation of a blood vessel (aneurysm) or various blockages, such as peripheral artery disease, stroke from carotid artery disease or intestinal ischemia. Vein diseases include varicose veins and the formation of a blood clot, also called deep vein thrombosis.

Kelso has interest in complex aortic pathology, which refers to diseases that are often under-diagnosed or under-treated. Early symptoms of many aortic diseases can be subtle and hard to detect, diagnose and treat. When the disease is recognized early, more treatment options are available, providing the best outcome for the patient. In all areas of vascular disease, Kelso provides expert minimally invasive and medical treatment options.

Outside of work, Kelso enjoys spending time with her family, being outside, traveling and music.
