In conjunction with Novant Health Hospice & Palliative Care (formerly Presbyterian Hospice & Palliative Care), Novant Health Foundation and Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center will unveil two exciting projects this fall 2013 within The Jack Matney Memorial Labyrinth Courtyard at Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte.
A new Remembrance Wall will provide the Charlotte community with a special way to acknowledge and remember loved ones, while supporting a worthy cause—the expansion of Presbyterian’s Harris Hospice Unit from eight beds to 18. The Remembrance Wall, designed by artist Tom Schulz, will be comprised of over 500 tiles of varying colors from earth to sky. This unique piece of art will be approximately 16’ x 23’ and will offer everyone – even those not touched by hospice – a way to honor or remember someone dear.
With a minimum gift of $1000 towards the Harris Hospice Unit expansion project, donors may submit a name for the wall. “Mothers, brothers, husbands, children, aunts, uncles, friends—this Remembrance Wall will be more than a collection of names on a wall but a unique way to celebrate memories of the heart, while helping others,” says Kathy Brown, project manager. Brown says, “Our hospice program serves over 5,000 families each year through our in-home hospice program and Harris Hospice Unit, and this project will help us serve more families as they face the end-of-life journey with loved ones.”
Brown says that many contributors love the idea of being part of this unique art piece, being able to remember or honor someone special, while contributing to something meaningful. “Every contributor’s story is unique,” says Brown, “but we have one young woman who raised money on her 30th birthday as a way to celebrate her mother’s memory. We have a bride who is asking for donations in lieu of wedding gifts in remembrance of her grandfather; another gift has gone in honor of a local priest, and I will remember my father and brother,” says Brown.
Brown says that in addition to the installation of the Remembrance Wall, Schulz will add a Prayer Corner and will repeat design elements similar to the Weisiger Chapel (located on the 3rd floor of Presbyterian Medical Center by the Harris Hospice Unit). A quiet place for prayer and reflection, the Prayer Corner will recognize all faith communities participating in Novant Health Hospice & Palliative Care’s Prayer Ministry. The Prayer Corner project is being funded by proceeds raised from Imagining Heaven, a book project spearheaded by Linda Matney, wife of the late Jack Matney, who was a patient with Novant Health Hospice & Palliative Care.
